SHELTERBOX – TRAINING WEEKEND

Understanding ShelterBox Operations Course

DATE HAS BEEN POSTPONED TILL MAY 2020

We are holding the Understanding ShelterBox Operations course at the Chuwar Scout Camp in Brisbane during May 2020 (details to be advised) due to hot weather being experienced in Brisbane. This course is open to all new and existing volunteers and I highly encourage everyone to try and attend. This is a deep dive into ShelterBox operations, providing field-specific techniques and will offer behind-the-scenes knowledge of how ShelterBox delivers aid to those affected by disaster.

Accommodation is provided (camping in ShelterBox tents for the weekend), all food and drinks will be provided, and airport pick-ups can be arranged. Participants are asked to cover their own travel expenses (you could possibly look for funding from your local club/district if you are a member of Rotary or other club).

The course is being facilitated by Mike Greenslade our CEO and will be a great opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of ShelterBox, connect with other volunteers, Shelter Box Response Team members and the ShelterBox team so please let me know if you would like to attend. Also please feel free to invite others that might be interested in becoming a ShelterBox volunteer.

WHEN

Changed till May 2020 - details TBA

The programme will begin at 0930 on Friday and we will complete our activities on Sunday (you should be free to depart by approximately 1230).

WHERE
Allawah, Scout Camp, Allawah Rd, Mount Crosby QLD 4306.

WHAT
Understanding ShelterBox Operations course is designed to give you an understanding of ShelterBox Response Teams in the field. There will be a combination of indoor and outdoor activities to reflect the challenges and conditions faced by our volunteers whilst on deployment in disaster zones. These activities will include walking along country paths and the opportunity to spend two nights in a ShelterBox tent under field conditions. This isn’t intended to make you feel uncomfortable, but to give you a better understanding of what our teams can encounter whilst on deployment.

By the end of the programme you will:
  • Understand ShelterBox’s strategic vision
  • Be familiar with the structures and relationships that exist to support aid delivery, including fundraising, communications, partnerships and the international humanitarian system
  • Have a greater understanding of operations, including the ShelterBox Response Team delivery model.

REGISTRATION
Volunteers must register to attend. Please email me the following information to secure your spot:
  • Name
  • Contact phone number
  • Email address

I encourage everyone to attend this weekend to gain a great understanding of the organisation and practical experience of the aid we deliver. By attending you are guaranteed to take with you a wealth of knowledge to invigorate your new or ongoing ShelterBox volunteer activities. Spaces are limited so please contact me if you are interested,

There is now a possibility a similar course could be organised in WA that would save the cost of flying to Brisbane. This has come about following some interest from a few people in WA. If there is sufficient interest plans could be put in place for it to be held in WA. Contact June Wade, E: junew1@me.com - WA ShelterBox D9465 Area Coordinator and District 9465 Chair

ACE is back!

The Rotary Club of Esperance Bay is proud to be hosting Adventure Camp Esperance in April 2020 (ACE 2020). ACE 2020 is a week-long camp for adults with disabilities from our own region.

“We had such a great response from participants and the wider community for Adventure Camp Esperance 2017, the Club thought it was time to do it again.” said Club President, Heather James.

ACE  2020 is an opportunity for participants to have a break from their usual activities and experience living in a camp situation. “Some people may not ever have been on a camp or been away from their family or primary carer for such a long period. For others, camp will offer activities they wouldn’t normally have the opportunity to experience.

“An important aspect of ACE is the respite it will provide to the families or carers of the camp participants, an opportunity to know that they can have a break and that the person they care for is in a safe environment and having a great time.”

Each camp participant will be matched with a one on one volunteer support worker who will encourage and guide them throughout the week. This person will be their camp friend or buddy for the week.

“We are on the lookout for people who are willing to take on the role of a volunteer support worker for ACE 2020. It’s a live-in role, staying in the beautiful boarding facilities at the Esperance Anglican Community School. Support workers, along with the participants, will be engaged in a range of fun activities with a trip to Woody Island, sand boarding, a gala dinner and lots of other activities are all planned. It’s a very rewarding role, and a lot of fun, but importantly you are giving a person with a disability, and their family, a fabulous opportunity.” Mrs James said.

The Rotary Club of Esperance Bay is very grateful to the organisations that have provided sponsorship for this event, including Southern Ports Authority, Shire of Esperance Community Grants program, Independence Group, the Rotary Club of Esperance and the Esperance Deep Sea Angling Club.

ACE 2020 is also supported by a range of community groups, small businesses and individuals who are working together to make ACE 2020 a fabulous event.

If you are interested in finding out more about being a volunteer support worker, a camp participant, or would like to assist with the camp in any other way, please contact ACE 2020 secretary, Lee Mackin on 0427 721 006 or landjmackin@westnet.com.au.
